:: Working with Muslims

As there is no Islamic continental body with a focus on Muslim-Christian relations for PROCMURA’s continental body to have bilateral relations with, PROCMURA’s relations with Muslims are strong at the grassroots levels. At the country level, PROCMURA works with the mainline Muslim groups within the Sunni and Shi’ite Muslim fraternity as well as among different groups within the same Muslim fraternity who are divided by theological or doctrinal differences.

In addition, PROCMURA works with the Qadiani branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim mission, even though in some situations mainstream Islamic organisations have threatened to boycott meetings because of the Ahmadis' presence.

Muslim leaders who participate in our programmes, especially those who collaborate with the various National Councils of Churches to carry out joint programmes for peace-building and how to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS care and prevention, for example, continually demonstrate their joy that we undertake these activities together from our respective faiths.   They laud PROCMURA’s honesty in advocating for faithful and responsible Christian witness to the Gospel, as well as our discussions with them to also ensure that Muslim da’wa (a call for non-Muslims to accept the Islamic faith) is carried out in a non-polemical manner with respect for the spirit of good neighbourliness. We continue to receive good will wishes  from Muslim organisations from time to time.

To conclude this section, it has to be said that PROCMURA’s ability to serve all churches of varied theological and doctrinal persuasions, and to find favour with Muslims who are open to work towards peace and peaceful co-existence for development stems from:

  • PROCMURA’s belief that there is no contradiction between embarking on faithful and responsible Christian witness in an interfaith environment of Muslims and Christians, and working towards building bridges of mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims for peaceful co-existence. Many African churches believe that this middle ground adopted by PROCMURA is the real ground in Christian-Muslim relations; in fact, perhaps the only credible ground in the Christian-Muslim encounter in the African continent.

  • PROCMURA’s ability to marry the different and varied strands of Christian-Muslim engagement and to come out with one which it believes befits the African situation.
